(UPDATED) Changes in Ateneo traffic scheme underway
by Angela Santos

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) is proposing changes to Ateneo’s traffic scheme to lessen road congestion on Katipunan during rush hours.

“Our proposal is to use Gate 1 as the lone exit during rush hours in the early morning and in the afternoon to ease traffic along Katipunan,” Noemi Recio, Planning and Division Chief of MMDA’s Traffic Engineering Center, says in Filipino. “This will entail a change in the overall traffic scheme of Ateneo.”

Recio explains that vehicles entering Gate 1 from the Katipunan flyover usually block the flow of vehicles coming from Marikina and Aurora. Gate 1 is currently being used as the entrance of Ateneo Grade School students.

MMDA officials are proposing a new Ateneo traffic scheme to ease road congestion along Katipunan during rush hours. IRENE ESCUADRO.

“If Gate 1 becomes an exit, the flow of cars from the end of the flyover will be smoother. Gates 2 and 3 will then serve as the entry points.”

Recio says that negotiations with the University Physical Plant Office (UPPO) are ongoing.

“We are currently evaluating the traffic scheme in Ateneo and we are designing new routes in accordance with the proposed changes,” she says.

Leoncio Miralao, UPPO Director, was unavailable for comment. Meanwhile, Ateneo Grade School bus drivers express disapproval of the plans.

“Mababawasan yung parking area namin kapag ginawang exit yung Gate 1. Isa pa, mawawalan ng waiting shed yung mga bata, (We will have lesser parking spaces if they turn Gate 1 into an exit. The children won’t be able to use the waiting shed either.),” says Clemente Sims.

For Alquin Gadingan, the proposed change will not be worth it. “Ang dami naman ng gusto nilang baguhin. Hindi naman maiiwasan ang trapik kahit kailan eh, magtutulungan na lang kami. (They are proposing too many changes. Traffic really can’t be prevented. We’ll just help each other out.)”
