Typhoon Egay floods Katipunan Avenue
by Candice Montenegro

QUEZON CITY, Philippines – Katipunan Avenue, as well as parts of Xavierville Subdivision in Loyola Heights, is flooded due to torrential rains.

Rainwater from Typhoon Egay flooded most parts of Katipunan Avenue, causing heavy traffic and congestion.

Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) officer Leonardo Sia said that the Katipunan stretch floods when it rains non-stop.

“Normally, it does not flood around here,” he said in Filipino. “It only floods when it rains hard because the water accumulate at certain areas.”

Xavierville Subdivision is ankle-deep in rainwater and P. Tuazon, a street perpendicular to Katipunan Avenue, is knee-deep in flood. Sia said that P. Tuazon is the lowest point in the area, making it the catchbasin.

Sia also said that rainwater accumulates because trash clogs the drains.

“People do not realize that their little trash clogs the drains,” he said. “They throw small things like cigarette butts, and these prevent the water from draining properly.”

He said that the MMDA is regularly cleaning up the streets, especially now that typhoons are coming.

“We are doing extra measures to clean up the streets immediately,” he said. “We want to make sure that it will not flood again the next time it rains hard.”
